FREESTATE PORK PRODUCERS ORGANISATION

NEW FASHION PORK, THE OTHER WHITE MEAT THAT IS HEALTHY AND TASTY

Whenever anyone talks of pork, the majority of people think about pork as a breakfast meat or a glazed ham at Christmas time. It is only through promotions and marketing that a new world can be opened to the consumer.

When the meat board dissolved, all the promotions, and marketing of pork stopped.

Together with a consultant, the Freestate Producers have conducted a market research to establish the needs of the dealers (butchers), and what methods of marketing would be most effective. It was very clear from this, that in-house promotions would deliver the best results. When a person sees something, smells and tastes it, a positive acceptance is unlocked and most times they will leave the butchery with the product and the recipe.

With this background information the FPPO thought up a plan to work hand in hand with butchers. Due to a breakdown in funds, promotions could not be done free of charge, and it was decided to work on a rand for rand basis between the meat trader (butcher) and the producers.

The butcher buys an annual contract at R160.00 per month for which he gets a one day monthly promotion, as well as everything that is needed to make the promotion a success. A pork promotion lady prepares a sample for the customer to taste, and offers recipes and information relating to the product she has prepared. Furthermore, within the area that the promotion ladies work, the butchers are advertised. The ladies also assist the butchers with product developments, advertisements, etc. Through all this, the pork producer becomes far more involved with the butchers and wonderful loyalties develop, where the public can be assured of a wonderful, and safe South African product.

Promotions can be done anywhere in the Freestate where producers and meat traders are prepared to take charge and move pork meat.
